There has never been a greater time to be an Australian wine consumer. The growth of online has seen many online wine companies become established. Even wineries, considered to be old fashioned, are now also offering their wines online to ship direct to customers.

However with the increase in wine choice online there are some operators who are taking advantage of consumers by selling wines that are poor in quality and/or overpriced. Many online retailers promote “exclusives” from wineries that are “hidden treasures”. While it may be adventurous to try new wineries, if you have never heard of it chances are you a taking a risk in buying it.

Buying online is no different to buying wine in a store – you are not able to taste the wine. The best way to ensure you are happy with your purchase is to have already previously bought and liked the wine. At the very least, liking a particular winery gives enough assurance to perhaps try a new style of wine that they produce.

3 Tips to Remember When Buying Wine Online

  1. Buying New Wines? Buy 1-2, not 12.

If you have never bought from a winery before, buy 1-2 bottles, not a dozen. If you like the bottles that you buy you can always re-order in greater volume. Otherwise you will be stuck a lot of bottles that barely make cooking wine grade. If you discover a new wine label you like, try buying a mixed dozen or half dozen to try their whole range. Maybe they produce white wines of a much higher quality compared to their reds.

  1. Hey Dan, Can I get a price Check?

If you think you have found a “steal” go check Dan Murphy’s online to see if they stock it. If Dan’s does stock it then be sure to compare prices. If the winery produces a lot cases of the wine you are looking for, Dan’s should stock it. Smaller volume producing or boutique wineries will normally not be stocked by them. Be mindful that you are comparing grapes with grapes – wines produced by the same winery from the same vintage. Perhaps a winery got lucky with its 2012 Shiraz but its 2013 is a real stinker.

  1. Be Aware of Illegal Wine

When opening any delivery of online wine, especially “Clean Skins” be sure that there are wine labels on the bottle contain key information required by law. This includes name & address of responsible wine entity, country of origin, allergens & total standard drinks that the bottle contains. Return to sender if any of these details are missing.
